In lieu of a weekend training ride, folks are encouraged to consider participating in this bike handling clinic.  Please send an email to [email protected] to register.

The Richmond Triathlon Club (RTC), Team Nature’s Path (TNP), and the Richmond Area Bicycling Association (RABA), supported by Richmond Pro Cycling (RPC), are coming together in a partnership to offer you great benefits!  The RTC, TNP, RABA and RPC are going to be offering joint clinics and workshops this year, as well as being available to answer all your questions. There is no pre-requisite on skill sets to take part in these workshops or to join any of the partner clubs.

Mark your calendars for the first clinic!

When:  Saturday, March 29, 2008, 10:00 to 11:30 AM

Where:  Direct Buy parking lot, 12830 West Creek Pkwy, Richmond, Virginia  23238

Who:  This clinic will be taught by Bill Malone, who is currently a CAT 2 cyclist and has over 20 years of cycling experience including years spent racing professionally and training at the Olympic Training Center.

What:

Bike handling
  • Pick up objects from the road while riding
  • Maneuver your bike in a straight line even when looking back
  • How to brake gradually
Incidental Contact
  • Learn to ride close to another rider
  • Shoulder and elbow bump (NOT handlebars!)
  • Hands on another rider’s shoulder while looking back
Pacelines & Double Pacelines; Open Road (Groups of 8-12)
  • Rotating paceline; pulling off gradually and drifting to the back
  • Maintain tight group
  • Shifting position with changing winds
  • Pointing out objects
  • Avoid overlapping wheels – maintaining a smooth consistent rotation
  • Position during hills – avoid another rider’s rear wheel as he/she stands up in front of you
What you will need:
  • A road bike in good working condition.
  • An ANSI or Snell approved helmet.
  • Adequate clothing for weather conditions - the riding portions of the clinics go on rain or shine (because races do too!).
  • Fluid.
  • A good attitude and a willingness to try new things!

Notes:

These are slow to moderate rides – no hammering please!!!   Please stay to the right and obey all traffic laws.   Helmets are required.  Aero bars are not recommended; however, if you have them, we will require that you do not get into an aero position during paceline drills.
