Executive Director

John Baumann has a keen interest in health care and non-profit management―and it shows! Incorporated in 1970, FFC has never been stronger in terms of its financial stability and program growth and development. And as you can very well imagine―especially with an economy that has tried the souls and patience of the American public―keeping a free clinic humming along is no small feat.

John earned his Ph.D. in Public Policy and Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University. His dissertation research addressed the ethics of human genetic engineering. His earlier academic work was in the biological sciences. He holds an M.S. in Biophysics from the University of Rochester, and a B.S. in Microbiology from Pennsylvania State University. John also served in the U.S. Peace Corps in the early 1980s, working in a malaria control program along the Burmese border in Thailand. He has been involved in nonprofit human services work since moving to Richmond sixteen years ago.

John served as Executive Director of Richmond AIDS Ministry in the early 1990s―at a time when effective treatments for people with AIDS were scarce and life expectancies were relatively short. He served as a community volunteer for a number of organizations―and as a stay-at-home parent―while earning his doctorate in the late 1990s. He was especially active with the United Way and with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). He served as President of the Board of the Central Virginia Chapter of NAMI from 2005 to 2008, after having served as Deputy Director at the State NAMI office. During that same period, he served on the board of REACH, a Richmond-area coalition of free clinics and community health centers. He is currently on the board of the Virginia Quality Healthcare Network.

Throughout his career, John has gravitated to populations that fall outside of the mainstream. We invite you to come to Fan Free Clinic and take some time to visit with John and learn more about the diversity of our community, the needs of our neighbors… and how FFC makes a difference for so many of them.
