Volunteers have been helping FFC to build a healthier community since 1970. Our volunteers include physicians, nurse practitioners, mental health and social service professionals—as well as students, retirees and other community members. By generously giving of their time, volunteers are able to help us improve the quality of life for thousands of men, women and children throughout the Richmond metropolitan area.
In FY09, volunteers contributed 8,878 hours of service at a value of approximately $378,915.

Volunteer Opportunities for Medical Professionals
Fan Free Clinic relies upon medical professionals to volunteer their time to provide treatment, education and support to our patients. Doctors (MDs), Nurse Practitioners (NPs),Registered Nurses (RNs), Physician Assistants (PAs), Pharmacists and others are needed on a regular and ongoing basis. Clinics are built around providers’ schedules, so we do ask for a firm commitment of X # of hours on specific days so that we can schedule our clinics. That said, which days and how many hours are up to you.

Other Volunteer Opportunities
- Medical Clinic Volunteer (Skilled; non-professional) – Involved with many aspects of the medical clinic, including (but not limited to) checking patients in, preparing exam rooms, assembling and filing charts, specimen testing, and assisting providers and staff. The Medical Clinic Volunteer must be self-motivated, detail-oriented, dependable, and compassionate and non-judgmental in their dealings with the populations we serve. The time commitment is at least 2 shifts per month, 3-4 hours per shift with a 6 month commitment.
- Financial Intake Volunteer – Must have consistent hours available to volunteer (e.g., every Tuesday from 9-1, every X from Y-Z – that kind of thing.) You will be scheduling and completing financial screening for our patients, so you must be able to clearly explain the process and assist each patient to fill out the appropriate forms. Attention to detail is key, as is a compassionate and non-judgmental approach to working with the populations we serve.
- Front Desk/Reception/Telephone Volunteer – Volunteers are (always) needed to help provide telephone and reception support here at FFC. This is a great way to meet interesting people and get to know the FFC staff.
- Food Pantry Volunteer – Individuals welcome; great for groups! Help unload our truck as we do our “food run,” stock pantry shelves, and help pack bags that we then distribute to our clients.
- Facility/Maintenance/Groundskeeping Volunteer – We’re always looking for people to help with outdoor property clean-up, weeding and sweeping, as well as interior projects like painting and repairs. Let us know if you or your group/organization are interested in helping out!
