G.E.T.M.A.D.

Social networks are a set of individuals that are linked by one or more specific types of relationships. They may include friends, family members, neighbors and partners. People in social networks often share the same behaviors and risks for a disease.

FFC’s Getting Everyone Tested, Making a Difference (G.E.T.M.A.D.) project asks the question: What are you doing about HIV in your community?—and then encourages individuals to use their influence within their social networks to persuade family and friends to get tested for HIV. This social networking strategy has as its primary goal the prevention of new HIV infections. This is accomplished by identifying individuals with undiagnosed HIV infection within various networks and linking them to medical care and prevention services.

The success of the G.E.T.M.A.D. project relies upon recruiters. Recruiters are individuals who are either HIV+ or HIV- but at high risk for becoming infected with the virus. They are enlisted to identify and recruit people from their social, sexual or drug-using networks who may be at risk for HIV infection. A recruiter’s role is to:

  • Identify people in their social network that could benefit from HIV testing services;
  • Discuss and recommend HIV testing; and
  • Escort or refer their associates to the testing agency.

The benefits for the recruiter are:

  • The satisfaction that comes from helping your friends, family, and community;
  • The ability to make a large impact for very little effort;
  • Contributing to a reduction in HIV infection rates; and
  • A financial incentive for the recruiter and his or her associates.
